Carl and Christine
Carl is an artist, producing work in a variety of media most of which adorns their home and occasionally the common house. Christine works in community association management, assisting homeowner association Boards of Director's in governance, financial and facilities management. Carol and Sylvia
Sylvia, a political scientist, teaches in the U-A Department of Latin American Studies. The current focus of her teaching and research is on Latin American social movements, particularly the environmental movement. It's an interest stemming from her political activism in the States, dating back to the 60s movements, and the ten years she spent living in Brazil and Panama. Her passions, besides Latin America, are her two daughters, two sons-in-law and four grandchildren in Portland, Oregon. Carol teaches and writes on subjects relating to property law, natural resources and the environment. (Stone Curves gives her lots of examples for property classes!) She came to the U-A Law College in part because of the tremendously interesting and important environmental issues in the desert. On her down time she reads everything she can about the fascinating Sonoran plants, and then she goes outside to get up close and personal with them in the back yard and around the grounds. She is something of a birder, and she has been thrilled to see the birds that have arrived in Stone Curves now that our vegetation has had time to mature. She likes hiking and biking, and she rides a bike to the University more days than not. She and Sylvia are always up for exploring the music, theatre and art of the Tucson area. Dan and Gina
Gina (62) is a retired Elementary School Counselor who loves children, cuddles newborns at Tucson Medical Center, and teaches infant massage to parents in groups or individually. She enjoys walking the Rillito River paths, practices yoga, and sings soprano in the UA University/Community Chorus. Currently, she serves on the Green Team, participates in a SC Women?s Group she co-founded several years ago, acts as the community?s reimbursement request coordinator and guest room linens coordinator, and performs regular clean-ups of the grounds inside and outside our curving wall. She?s also hoping a piece of marble she's been chiseling for 30 years will find completion and a home somewhere at Stone Curves! Being in community with friendly neighbors and contributing in whatever way she can is a joy for Gina. Dan (58) is a husband, a dad, a drummer, a grad student, and a part-time announcer for the U of A's NPR-affiliate FM station. He?s in the closing semesters of a graduate program in ethnomusicology, and making progress on a fascinating thesis project which will take the form of a documentary/historical/ethnographic film. He also loves RV traveling, hiking, biking, poetry, cooking, film and humor. Dan finds real joy in the day-to-day interactions with his neighbors, and the opportunities for performing meaningful work that are offered by living in community at Stone Curves. His love of community is captured in a 10-minute film, "Living This Way", which he completed in early 2010. Dan and Gina are the proud parents of two grown daughters, Charlotte (34) a costume and jewelry designer living in L.A., and Lillie (31), a nurse in Tucson?and have a spunky little terrier mix, Biden, who has many good friends in the Stone Curves community. The CraigsWe are a unique blended family of five and one dog. We are committed to sustainability and the helping professions. Kimberly is a therapist, and Chris is a currently a teacher. We have three children. Sasha, 18, and Sequoia, 12, live here at Stone Curves. Our son Trevor lives nearby. We have a wonderful dog, Aloo. Our passions are rock-climbing and exploring mountains and canyons. Drew and Matvey Cronyn
Eugene works in the mortgage industry and perhaps that?s enough said. It hasn't been very inspiring, lately, but he has found ways to relax here at Stone Curves. This includes, but is not limited to, organizing wine tastings with Tanya, taking 40 people bowling, deflecting death threats over the annual budget, and being ?President.? He is currently looking for even more ways to relax? Lily is a 6th grader. She loves her family very much and prefers to hang at home and at Stone Curves than to go to school. She recently got paid $5.00 to review a book for the school library, though, so she may have found her future? Milena is a 1st grader and loves the fact that her mum and her sister are all at the same school. She has recently been turned on to reading and it?s a very exciting time. She creates lovely stories and lately has been wondering why school makes her learn certain things when really she would like to learn other things? Harmony and Noah
Noah comes to Arizona from Michigan by way of Oregon. He has visited 48 of the 50 states, is an avid cyclist, and takes advantage of every opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. Noah spends his days pouring geologic knowledge into the minds of college students. Harmony and Noah moved to Tucson in 2006 for the three-letter word and have found a home at Stone Curves, where they currently live with their two small lions, Oliver and Oscar. Isabel
It?s great to be able to take advantage of Tucson?s terrific art and theater offerings. I like learning new things, reading, travelling, swimming, cooking ? and loafing. Before retiring, I made my living designing and developing online learning programs. With a background in art education, I enjoy working with other Curvers on art projects, and volunteering some of my time teaching. I love community living and wish I had discovered it earlier in my life., and I try to be something of an extra grandmother to Stone Curves kids. Kathleen Dreier and Logan BoydMom Kathleen and 14-year-old son Logan have been renting in Stone Curves since the summer of 2009. Kathleen, who wears many hats, is an event photographer with a photo journalistic style, a natural custom perfumer and a social worker. Logan is a 9th grader in the Honors program at Amphi High School. He is a 4-time Arizona State Cycling Champion for a youth Tucson-based youth cycling group called El Grupo. Logan also holds a double black belt in Karate that he received from the marvelous KoSho Karate Dojo. Kathleen and Logan have an elder cat named Armando who is a contradiction of sweetness and attitude! Kathleen and Logan enjoy living at Stone Curves very much and being part of a community of friendly, supportive and engaging people. While Kathleen can often be found working in the community garden, Logan will help neighbors out with different tasks that need to get done like painting, moving trash, and animal care. Being from Buffalo, NY, I was dazzled by the warm sunny turquoise blue skies and the exquisite beauty of the desert. Tucson?s charm captured my heart and I felt that I was home. I felt the same sense of ?coming home? when I moved into the Stone Curves Community. Living here has felt like being a member of a large family of interesting people sharing common objectives. It is definitely a wonderful opportunity for growth, as we learn to live in community. As a brief snapshot of myself?I am semi-retired from a position of Senior Research Specialist in the Neural Systems, Memory and Aging Division of Arizona Research Laboratories at the U of A. My career has been in both the commercial art field and science over the years. A couple of high points in my career in the arts has been working as an artist for Hallmark Cards, and being the Graphic arts Director at KUAT Channel 6. My strongest interest is in ever expanding my consciousness, and deepening my understanding by exposing myself to new ideas and experiences. I enjoy just being. I also enjoy being with people, and being in nature, and activities like reading, hiking, rockscaping, traveling, and the arts. LaneLane is a 6-year veteran of Stone Curves and a 33-year citizen of Tucson. Needless to say, she a fan of the mountains and desert here and stays in Arizona despite its red-state politics. She has loved living among friends and neighbors in a beautiful, cooperative, and supportive (if not loving) environment. Some advantages of community: people really appear to want to help each other; your major social life is a given; there is normally someone who knows something about what you are asking about; and...you will never, ever be hungry again. As a counselor helping to provide services to people who do not have the support of a community, she is very grateful to come home to her rather huge extended family!! Lois Martin
Most of my SC community work share time has been devoted to our chickens. As a vegetarian who doesn't much like eggs, I can only explain this work choice as based on my love of animals, virtually all animals. I share my home with three cats, Frankie, Maggie and Squeaky; each with a very definite ideas of how I should run my life. I try to meet their expectations, but it's not easy. As for "migrants", when I retired from college teaching in Massachusetts, part of my decision to move to Tucson was fueled by my long-standing activism relating to solidarity with our Latin American neighbors. Tucson, as the epicenter of the humanitarian crisis on our border, was a natural choice to continue this activism. In the six years since I arrived I have worked with all the organizations devoted to ending the deaths of migrants struggling to cross our desert and to aiding those deported to Mexico. I have found Stone Curves to be a caring, supportive community in which to pursue all my interests. Riley and Elwin
This dynamic duo has settled at Stone Curves with their Mom after years living in various residences including a yurt, tipi, and desert kiva. Some of their favorite things at SC include weekly meal clubs, the playground, and the grassy field. When they are not busy walking their beagle Wishbone or taking out compost they can be found practicing the violin and making comic books. Paloma and Nolan
Shawn re-careered into nursing a couple of years ago and now works at a local hospital in the orthopedics/neurology unit. Previously she worked in minority student affairs/diversity sensitivity in higher education and taught in community colleges and prisons in Illinois, North Dakota, Texas, and New York. When Hannah came along, she became a full-time Mom and experienced ?community? in a small village neighborhood in Western New York. The 8+ families provided mutual support of every kind including taking night shifts to help a family through the stress of a colicky baby, sharing meals for all occasions, childcare, and celebrating life transitions. Moving into Stone Curves felt completely natural as we anticipated continuing the ever-connecting circles of like-minded people who want and desire to join together for a common purpose! Hannah is an 8th grader at Basis Upper School. She especially enjoys literature, writing, and physics. Her favorite thing to do is spend time with her friends. She plays piano to relax and babysits many of the children in her community. She loves to go on adventures and each summer makes a solo trip back to that little village in NY to see her friends and aunt and uncle. Hiking, caring for a desert tortoise, yoga, biking, and going on adventures are some of Shawn?s favorite things. Hannah loves hanging out with her friends and will indulge her Mom in a hike every once in a while. We both enjoy going to DeGrazia Studios for some quiet time and to light a candle in the chapel. Our neighborhood here at Stone Curves is interesting, inspiring, and friendly. Our decision-making experiences are very illuminating. The diversity of perspectives offers opportunities to stretch our individual views on life. We share meals, movies, and birthdays. There is an extension of love and care that ultimately transcends the difficult times. It is a blessing to live here. Tres and George
George is looking forward with both trepidation and excitement to finding out what community life at SC is all about. He is part of the Old Time music community, plays banjo and guitar and is learning mandolin. He and Tres travel to North Carolina each summer to learn more OT music. George also likes to read, is interested in photography and is a good finder i.e. if it?s lost, he finds. He, Tres and DOC the dog walk at least an hour a day. He is not quite retired yet as a psychotherapist. Tres's early experience living in community was after she and her parents emigrated from the Netherlands. She grew up in a small ethnic religious community in rural Michigan. She then spent 40+ years as a group worker and psychotherapist for adults and children, creating a variety of community experiences. Now she is enjoying the SC community experience. She loves walking and hiking in the desert and hopes to do more biking. She also plays and, occasionally teaches, mountain dulcimer. She enjoys traveling and camping. She and George share an interest in training their dog DOC, adopted here in AZ. They play a daily game of Scrabble while eating 1.6 ounces of dark chocolate (the recommended dosage for best health according to AARP) They?re also excited about having set up a photovoltaic system on their roof and can now watch the dials spin as they make electricity. Vicky Bradley
I have so enjoyed watching Stone Curves grow from a vision of a few dreamers to a vibrant community. I am blessed to have an adult son and daughter who enjoy hanging out here. I've had a long and varied career in behavioral health and corrections has led to a current involvement with Tucson?s growing refugee population. From my "harbor" I hope for many more adventures ? always glad to come home to my friends and neighbors. Virginia and Amber
What can I say? I believe in urban infill, going against the sprawl, sharing resources, living more simply with less and enjoying spontaneous cookouts with my cool neighbors. I am a yoga teacher, shiatsu/bodyenergywork practitioner and I offer an ongoing yoga class to the community. I also work in theatre and play with all kinds of dance. My next event will be to bring a west coast swing dance teacher here to teach a class followed by an evening of dancing. The great thing about SC is having such a diverse group of talented people who share their interests, expertise and passions. From wine tastings to movies on the lawn or making gingerbread. |
